The Cavern

13.00: November 9, 1961

In a crowded Liverpool club a local group is playing. On stage our four young men dressed in dirty jeans and leather jackets. They look wild and dangerous. The audience loves them.

The music is loud rock and roll. The songs are old favourites from Chuck Berry and Elvis. There are a few new ones too.

The band is called The Beatles. They are recently back from playing in
Hamburg. ‘They’re so much better,’ people say. ‘It’s like a different group.’

There are two lead singers. One is a wild looking guitarist called John Lennon. The other is a pretty boy with a baby face. His name is Paul McCartney.

The drummer, Pete Best, is a favourite with the girls. He is less popular with other members of the group.

The men in suits

In the crowd are two older men in suits. They clearly come from a different world. Over the PA comes an announcement: ‘Welcome Mr Epstein. We hope you enjoy the show.’
